What Is DCIS?

DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) or stage 0 breast cancer is the earliest stage of breast cancer. It occurs when abnormal cells are found inside the milk ducts but have not spread into surrounding breast tissue. Treatment typically includes surgery to remove the abnormal cells, sometimes followed by radiation therapy or hormone therapy to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
